Had the pleasure recently doing some consultant work for director/producer Joseph Hill’s unparalleled documentary, BLACK BORDER WARRIORS: The Seminole Indian Scouts. It’s about an elite group of 1/2 black, 1/2 Indian commandos for the U.S. Cavalry during the Indian Wars in the American West in the 1870’s and 1880’s, primarily shot in TX and OK. His documentaries garnered several major accolades including a Peabody nomination, Cable ACE award, Beacon award, and National Association of Black Journalist award.
I first met “Joe,” a reporter/producer for 22 years, when we worked at a TV station in Rochester, NY. He talked about making this film one day — and that day has indeed arrived! When I saw the rough cut of BBW, I immediately thought, “Why wasn’t any of this mentioned in school?” Way to go Joe!
He also does invited lectures about the Black Seminole and the Seminole Negro Indian Scouts, as well as other historical subjects including the History of Haiti, Canadian towns settled by fugitive slaves, and Black Migratory Patterns in the U.S. All compelling stuff! ~ K
I was privileged to read the script before it was shot and see the “rough cut” during the editing phase. And, trust me, writer Marilynn Barner Anselmi and director Evan Kidd are a HOT HOT HOT creative duo keep making hit after hit!!! Check out the [trailer]
Thank you North Carolina Wesleyan, especially Dr. Bill Grattan, for recently inviting me to present a lecture on “Surviving as an Independent Film/Media Creative.” Your students and faculty were especially warm and hungry to learn. Not to mention, we got some networking and fun in!
Win-Win-Win! ~ Ken
Just got word that I received $1400 in funds from ECU’s School of Art and Design towards exhibiting my new “coming of age drama” entitled Booyah! Thank you so much ECU School of Art and Design, ECU College of Fine Arts and Communication, and ECU. As they say in radio, “Keep it here for more details” about the film.
Over the weekend, did a post-production consultation for the award-winning team of writer Marilynn Barner Anselmi and director Evan Kidd for their upcoming drama, Learning Man!
Summary: The ghost of a former slave wanders an old North Carolina textile mill waiting on a promise. She believes a young construction worker is her long awaited teacher. Can he become the promised Learning Man? Click here / see trailer!
